Detailed introduction of titanium alloy target polishing process

In the process of titanium alloy mold manufacturing, the smooth processing and mirror processing after shape processing are called part surface grinding and polishing, which are important processes to improve the quality of the mold. Mastering a reasonable polishing method can improve the quality and service life of titanium alloy molds, and then improve the product quality. Today, expert from RSM Technology Department will share some relevant knowledge about titanium alloy target polishing.

Common polishing methods and working principles

  1. Titanium alloy target mechanical polishing

Mechanical polishing is a polishing method that removes the convex part of the workpiece surface to obtain a smooth surface by cutting or plastically deforming the material surface. Generally, oilstone strips, wool wheels, sandpaper, etc. are used. Manual operation is the main method. Ultra precision polishing can be used for those with high surface quality requirements. Ultra precision lapping and polishing uses special abrasives. In the lapping and polishing liquid containing abrasives, it is pressed against the machined surface of the workpiece for high-speed rotation. With this technology, ra0.008 can be achieved μ M U.M, which is the best surface roughness among various polishing methods. This method is often used in optical lens molds. Mechanical polishing is the main method of mold polishing.

  2. Titanium alloy target chemical polishing

Chemical polishing is to make the micro convex part of the surface dissolve preferentially than the concave part of the surface in the chemical medium, so as to obtain a smooth surface. This method can polish complex shaped workpieces, and can polish many workpieces at the same time with high efficiency. The surface roughness obtained by chemical polishing is generally RA10 μ m。

  3.Titanium alloy target  electrolytic polishing

The basic principle of electrolytic polishing is the same as that of chemical polishing, that is, by selectively dissolving the tiny protruding parts on the surface of the material, the surface is smooth. Compared with chemical polishing, it can eliminate the influence of cathode reaction and has better effect.

  4. Titanium alloy target ultrasonic polishing

Ultrasonic polishing is a method of polishing brittle and hard materials through abrasive suspension by ultrasonic vibration of tool section. The workpiece is put into the abrasive suspension and placed in the ultrasonic field together. The abrasive is ground and polished on the workpiece surface by the oscillation of the ultrasonic wave. The macro force of ultrasonic machining is small, which will not cause workpiece deformation, but it is difficult to make and install tooling.

  5. Titanium alloy target fluid polishing

Fluid polishing relies on the flowing liquid and the abrasive particles it carries to wash the surface of the workpiece to achieve the purpose of polishing. Hydrodynamic grinding is driven by hydraulic pressure. The medium is mainly made of special compounds (polymer like substances) with good flowability under low pressure and mixed with abrasives. The abrasives can be silicon carbide powder.
